Raasaathi Niram

Skin color and nudity have been the foremost concepts on my mind for this collection. It has also been a personal journey for me being South Indian and dark skinned and a girl. I wanted to talk about color throughout the collection using different textures and techniques, using the body as almost like a canvas for expressing my state of mind.
Modesty and colonialism are very closely related. So exploring the brown body through a post-colonial lens, spreading body positivity, size inclusivity and love for one’s skin color has been my main goal.
I have named the collection “RASAATHI NIRAM”. It means a princess's colour in Tamil. It is used in an ironic sense to portray how the brown body is seen as sinful and shameful while the multifaceted nature of nakedness in India can be taboo, and also not, in the context of spiritual holiness.
The key idea behind this collection is the fact that no matter what you wear, your skin will always be your first line of defense, the filter through which the world sees you and justifies your existence. The fabrics engage with the viewer and tell them what they want to see in the wearer.
