METROPOLIS

Drawing upon the ethos of makers who resist the constraints of corporate environments, “Metropolis” delves into the intricate interplay of skills inherent in their craft. This exploration is articulated through the medium of traditional corporate textiles, supported by geometric forms and narratives inspired by 1920s silent German Expressionist cinema. The work invites a critical examination of professionalism, highlighting the tension between individual creativity and institutional expectation

AYLA ANDERSON (ALSO KNOWN AS)

Makers have been cast aside by society, deemed ‘unprofessional’ for their overwhelm of work. They lie in the shadows of the corporate man, held at such a height it is impossible to reach him.
The makers gather their tools, attaching them to their uniforms so that they overwhelm their silhouettes, and set out to create a new world.

A world in which the physical presence of the tools of their trade communicate their dedication to their craft, showing a level of professionalism the corporate man could never dream of.

The weight of their tools nearly immobilises them, however… they continue to work.

This story highlights the importance of makers within our society as well as their inherent professionalism that goes unnoticed by the mainstream worker. Six characters are used to embody this storyline, with six different crafts explored using ultra-functionality to the point of un-wearability. Traditional corporate fabrics are utilised to further drive home the message of professionalism.

THE ARTIST. THE BUILDER. THE PHOTOGRAPHER. THE CHEF. THE DESIGNER. THE SCRIBE.
